Royal Owl Academy Emergency Response Actions

Royal Owl Academy has developed plans for a variety of emergency situations. In addition to any “natural” emergencies, we have established a “lock-down” system and have supplies stored in case of an extended emergency. The teaching staff and children practice fire drills monthly and are taught what to do in case of emergencies. Every classroom teacher is certified in the use of CPR and First Aid.

IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY, A STAFF WILL ANSWER OR AN UPDATED MESSAGE WILL BE LEFT ON THE NUMBER (971) 245-2048. PARENTS SHOULD CALL THIS NUMBER TO HEAR DETAILS AND INSTRUCTIONS.

Evacuation

In the event of an evacuation, children will be escorted to a “safety zone” in or near the Royal Owl Academy. Attendance will be taken, and parents notified of the situation. Teachers take emergency phone numbers for each child to our destination; therefore, it is important that parents keep emergency forms updated at all times. At some point, if necessary, and if cellular services are available, a message will be left on the parent’s emergency phone number, or an email will be sent to explain the situation. Keeping the children safe and calm is our first priority. In some circumstances we may call the Portland Police Department (971) 245-2048 to inform them of our location in case they receive calls from worried parents.

Earthquakes

In case of an Earthquake and children are outside and cannot be taken inside we will have them drop, cover and hold. Children will do the same inside as well under a table/chair/ piece of sturdy furniture or windowless “safety zone.”

Fire/Toxic Spills

In case of a fire, all children will be led out of the building to a designated “safety zone.” Once the evacuation is completed, teachers confirm that all children are present, and make sure that the number of children reflects the total number of children in attendance that day. Children will remain in the safety zone until the “all clear” notification is given (and the alarm is turned off) and a Fire/Police Official approves the return to the building. Safety zones are: Right on the corner to the left of the daycare, 4134 N.E. 9th- in front of home, or the library on 15th and Fremont.

Responding to Lost Children

In the unlikely event that a child should become lost, teachers will conduct a sweep of the area. If the child is not located within five minutes, the Portland police will be notified. Parents will be notified immediately.
